Before you walk into a mattress shop in Hubballi or order online, here are 12 questions to ask. The answers tell you almost everything about whether the shop (or maker) is trustworthy and whether you’re getting an honest deal.
The 12 critical questions
1. “What’s the foam density of your support core, in kg/m³?”
What to expect: A specific number like “28” or “30.” Red flag: “Premium quality” or “high-grade” without a number. If they won’t give you a number, they’re being vague on purpose — probably because the foam is low-quality and they don’t want you to know. See our foam density guide for what the numbers mean.
2. “How long is your warranty, and what does it cover?”
What to expect: “5 years, covers manufacturing defects like seam tears and foam defects.” Specific coverage listed. Red flag: Vague promises like “we stand behind our product” or short warranties (1–2 years). Long warranties suggest they’re confident in durability. Short ones suggest they expect problems early.
3. “What’s your return/trial policy?”
What to expect: “30–60 night return period, refund if unsatisfied.” Red flag: “No returns” or “restocking fee.” If they won’t let you try the mattress for weeks, they’re not confident you’ll like it. A shop confident in their mattresses welcomes long trials.
4. “Can I lie on a sample in my sleep position?”
What to expect: “Yes, of course.” They’ll bring samples for you to test, let you lie for several minutes, ask about comfort. Red flag: “We don’t have samples” or “just 30 seconds to test.” You need time to feel how the mattress actually responds to your body weight and position. Quick tests are useless.
5. “Who made this mattress?”
What to expect: “We manufacture it” (direct maker) or the name of an actual manufacturer. Red flag: “Um, I’m not sure” or evasion. A legitimate maker knows who made their product. If they don’t know, they’re probably a middleman with no real relationship to the manufacturer — which often means you’re paying extra markup for them being in the middle.
6. “Can I see where it’s made or talk to the makers?”
What to expect: “Visit our facility anytime,” or “I’ll connect you with engineering.” Red flag: “That’s not possible” or reluctance. A maker with nothing to hide is transparent about their process. If they won’t let you see or talk to makers, they might be hiding low-quality production or outsourcing to an unknown vendor.
7. “What’s the cost breakdown?”
What to expect: “Support core costs ₹X, comfort layer ₹Y, cover ₹Z, total ₹[amount],” or honest framing like “no middleman markup, you’re paying for materials + fair margin.” Red flag: Refusal to explain the price or vague “it’s worth it” language. Transparent makers explain what they’re charging for.
8. “What’s your return process if there’s a manufacturing defect?”
What to expect: “Contact us, we verify the defect, pick it up free if it’s ours, repair or replace.” Red flag: “You arrange pickup” or vague processes. A confident maker handles logistics for genuine defects — they’re not trying to make you jump through hoops to claim warranty.
9. “Are there any exclusions in the warranty I should know about?”
What to expect: “Staining not covered, normal compression is expected, damage from misuse not covered.” Clear, reasonable exclusions. Red flag: “Everything except staining” or warranty so riddled with exceptions it’s nearly useless. Read the warranty in writing before buying — don’t trust verbal promises.
10. “How do you handle customer complaints?”
What to expect: “Direct phone or WhatsApp contact, we resolve within 1–2 weeks,” or “we listen and act.” Red flag: “Call a toll-free number,” “file a ticket online,” or slow response times. Direct contact means you’ll actually reach someone who can help, not a call center designed to exhaust you into giving up.
11. “What firmness do you recommend for my sleep position?”
What to expect: They ask about your sleep position, weight, any pain, then recommend a specific firmness with reasoning. Red flag: “Everyone loves medium,” or “this firmness suits everyone.” Every body and sleep position needs different firmness. If they don’t ask questions and customize the recommendation, they’re not thinking about you. See our sleep position guide for how this should work.
12. “What makes your mattress different from competitors?”
What to expect: A specific answer like “we use 28+ kg/m³ foam at this price point” or “we’re local so service is direct” — concrete differences backed by what they actually do. Red flag: Vague marketing like “premium quality” or “the best” or criticizing competitors without specifics. Legitimate makers explain themselves with facts, not hype.
The red flags summary
If you hear any of these, you’re likely dealing with a shop that doesn’t deserve your money:
- “Foam density? We don’t talk about that.”
- “Our warranty is verbal — we stand behind it.”
- “No returns; you buy it, you own it.”
- “The manufacturer is overseas, I don’t know them well.”
- “Everyone loves this mattress; you will too.”
- “Don’t worry about the price — you get what you pay for,” without explaining what.
- “We can’t help with issues after sale.”
What transparency looks like
A trustworthy mattress maker:
- Answers every question directly with specific numbers or facts.
- Lets you test samples in your sleep position for as long as you need.
- Offers a real return period (30+ nights).
- Is reachable by phone or WhatsApp, not just through an online form.
- Stands behind their warranty with clear coverage and a simple process.
- Asks you questions about YOUR needs, not just trying to sell you something.

Frequently asked questions
Should I trust a shop if they can’t answer these questions?
No. A legitimate maker either knows the answers or admits they don’t and finds out. If they dodge or refuse to answer, they have something to hide.
Are these questions rude or suspicious to ask?
No. A good shop expects these questions and welcomes them. They’re buying a ₹20,000+ product — asking tough questions is smart consumer behavior.
What if a shop gives great answers to these questions?
You’re likely dealing with someone trustworthy. Transparency is a strong signal. Add the 60-night trial period and you’ve got a safe purchase.
Are there other questions I should ask?
Yes — anything specific to your situation. If you have back pain, ask about their experience with back-pain buyers. If you sleep hot, ask which specific specs they recommend for cooling. Personalized questions reveal how much they actually care about matching you to the right mattress.
