Walk into a mattress shop and someone will ask, “What size do you need?” The answer isn’t just a name — you need to know the actual dimensions so you can be sure the mattress fits your bed frame, doorways, and room. This is a clear dimensions guide with a chart so you never guess.
Standard mattress sizes in India
| Size | Dimensions (L × W) | In Inches | Common Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 190 × 90 cm | 75″ × 36″ | One person, narrow rooms, kids |
| Double | 190 × 120 cm | 75″ × 48″ | Two people, standard Indian bedrooms |
| Queen | 190 × 150 cm | 75″ × 60″ | Two people, larger bedrooms |
| King | 190 × 180 cm | 75″ × 72″ | Two people, luxury bedrooms |
How to measure your existing mattress
If you’re replacing a mattress and want to match the size:
- Measure length: Lay a measuring tape along the mattress lengthwise (head to foot). Most mattresses are 190 cm long (the standard).
- Measure width: Measure across the widest part of the mattress. This varies — note your number exactly.
- Check your bed frame: Some older beds have non-standard dimensions. Measure the frame itself, not just the mattress.
How to measure your bed frame
Before buying, measure your actual bed frame (not the mattress):
- Inside dimensions: Measure the inside of the frame where the mattress sits. A “double” frame might actually be 118 cm or 122 cm wide — variations exist.
- Length: Measure length. Standard is 190 cm, but some frames are 188 cm or 192 cm. If your frame is non-standard, your mattress needs to match the frame, not the name.
- Account for fitted sheet thickness: If the frame measurements are exactly 120 cm × 190 cm, a 120 × 190 mattress will fit but might be tight with thick sheets. A slightly smaller mattress (119 × 189) gives wiggle room.
Non-standard sizes
Some beds don’t fit standard sizes. Examples:
- Older beds: Pre-1990s beds sometimes have non-standard dimensions (e.g., 185 cm long instead of 190).
- Custom frames: Built-in beds or antique frames often have custom dimensions.
- Adjustable beds: Electric adjustable beds usually require custom-fit mattresses.
If your frame is non-standard, a direct-from-manufacturer maker like AasaN can usually make a custom size. A big brand will tell you “sorry, not in stock.” For custom sizing, measure your frame precisely and contact us before ordering. See our ordering guide for the custom-size process.
Thickness (height) matters
Mattress thickness affects comfort and fit into your bed frame.
- Thin (4–6 inches/10–15 cm): Low-cost, firm, less cushioning. Often used in guest rooms or budget situations. Feels flat.
- Standard (6–8 inches/15–20 cm): Most common. Gives you support + comfort without being too high or too soft.
- Thick (8–10+ inches/20–25+ cm): More foam, more cushioning, feels “sunk into.” Comfortable if you like softness, but higher mattress means higher overall bed height (important if you have mobility issues or short stature).
Check your bed frame’s designed mattress height. Some frames are built for 6-inch mattresses and a 10-inch mattress looks absurdly high. Others expect 8 inches and a thin mattress sits in a gap. Match the thickness to your frame.
Doorway clearance
Before buying, measure your bedroom doorway width. A 150 cm (Queen) or 180 cm (King) mattress can be rolled for delivery, but it’s tight. If your bedroom doorway is less than 80 cm wide, confirm delivery can happen (they may need to rotate the mattress or remove a door temporarily). For context:
- Standard bedroom doorway: 80–90 cm wide
- Narrow hallway: 70–75 cm wide
- A rolled Queen or King mattress: ~80 cm diameter rolled
Most deliveries navigate standard doorways fine, but if your bedroom is in a tight space, warn the delivery team beforehand.
Size choice by situation
- Single adult, space-constrained: Single (90×190). Fits narrow rooms, easy to move.
- Two adults sharing, standard Indian bedroom: Double (120×190). Most common, fits most frames. Gets a bit snug for two people, but doable.
- Two adults, comfort priority: Queen (150×190). More space per person, noticeably more comfortable for couples.
- Two adults, luxury/high-turnover (PGs, guest rooms): King (180×190). Maximum space. Usually in larger homes.
Custom sizes available
If your frame doesn’t match standard sizes, AasaN makes custom mattresses. Examples we’ve done:
- 140 × 195 cm (non-standard double)
- 175 × 200 cm (extra-long king)
- Odd shapes for built-in beds
Custom sizes take 5–7 days manufacturing vs. 3–4 for standard sizes. Cost is similar to standard (no huge premium), but you need exact frame measurements. See our ordering guide for how to order custom.

Frequently asked questions
What if my bed frame measurements don’t match standard sizes?
Measure precisely (inside of the frame) and tell us. We can make a custom size within 5–7 days at similar cost to standard sizes.
Can I use a smaller mattress on a larger frame?
Technically yes, but it looks bad and creates gaps. A mattress should fit the frame closely. If your frame is non-standard, get a custom mattress to match.
Does thickness affect firmness?
No — thickness (height) and firmness are separate. A 10-inch mattress can be firm or soft depending on the foam. A 6-inch mattress can be firm or soft. Don’t confuse them.
What’s the best size for a couple?
Queen (150×190) or larger. A double (120×190) works but is snug — you each get about 60 cm width, which is tight for tossing and turning. If budget allows, go queen.
