How to Clean a Mattress at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide

A mattress absorbs sweat, dust, and the occasional spill for years without ever going through a proper wash. Most people vacuum it once and hope for the best. Here’s an honest, step-by-step way to actually clean a mattress at home, without damaging the foam inside.

What you’ll need

  • A vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment
  • Baking soda
  • A mild detergent or upholstery cleaner
  • A clean cloth and cold water
  • Direct sunlight or a well-ventilated room

Step 1: Strip and vacuum

Remove all bedding and vacuum the entire surface, including the sides, using the upholstery attachment. This lifts dust, dead skin, and mite debris that accumulates deep in the fabric over weeks — the biggest, easiest win most people skip.

Step 2: Treat stains promptly and gently

Dab — never rub — a stain with a cloth dampened in mild detergent and cold water. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the foam. Work from the outside of the stain inward to avoid spreading it. Avoid soaking the mattress; excess moisture is much harder to remove from foam than the stain itself.

Step 3: Deodorise with baking soda

Sprinkle a generous, even layer of baking soda over the entire surface and leave it for at least a few hours, ideally overnight. Baking soda absorbs trapped odour and moisture. Vacuum it off thoroughly afterward.

Step 4: Dry completely before covering

This step matters most and is skipped most often. Foam that stays damp inside develops odour and, over time, can weaken. If weather allows, let the mattress air in a ventilated room or brief direct sunlight until fully dry before putting sheets back on — this can take several hours.

What not to do

  • Don’t soak it. Foam absorbs water easily and dries very slowly from the inside out.
  • Don’t use harsh bleach directly on foam. It can break down the foam structure and cause discolouration.
  • Don’t skip the drying step to save time — a damp mattress that gets covered too soon is a common cause of persistent odour.

Prevention is easier than cleaning

A good waterproof mattress protector prevents most stains and moisture from ever reaching the mattress in the first place — far easier than treating them after. See our guide to waterproof mattress protectors.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean my mattress?

A light vacuum every month and a full clean (baking soda deodorising plus stain treatment) every 3–6 months keeps a mattress in good condition. Address spills and stains immediately rather than waiting.

Can I wash a foam mattress with water?

Not by soaking it. Spot-clean with a lightly damp cloth and mild detergent, then dry thoroughly. A fully soaked foam mattress can take days to dry internally and may develop odour or mould in the meantime.

Does baking soda actually remove mattress odour?

Yes — baking soda is genuinely effective at absorbing trapped moisture and odour when left on the surface for several hours before vacuuming. It’s one of the few home remedies that reliably works.
